Since its 2006 release, The Devil Wears Prada has evolved from box office success into a cultural phenomenon. What started as a sharp, entertaining comedy has become one of the defining films of a generation. It has sparked debate over everything from toxic workplaces and troublesome bosses to whether Miranda was the real villain of the piece or not (the internet largely agrees that it was actually Andy's unsupportive boyfriend, Nate). There's also the sheer volume of iconic lines, from Miranda's cerulean monologue, to other assistant Emily asking Andy if she's heading to "some hideous skirt convention", to Miranda assuring Andy that "everybody wants this", which have permeated pop-culture consciousness, turned into viral TikToks and beyond.
That lasting impact was confirmed when the second film went into production, sparking the kind of paparazzi frenzy and fan attention seen on only the biggest of blockbuster fare. The teaser trailer, aptly soundtracked by Madonna's Vogue, offers a tantalising glimpse of the movie to come: Miranda striding through the office in spiky red heels, joined in the elevator by Andy, who smirks behind sunglasses as Miranda delivers a perfectly cutting "Took you long enough."
In the year 2932, an idyllic future where people live in homes high above the Earth, Arco mistakenly travels back to the year 2075, a dystopian age of environmental peril. Here, Arco makes fast friends with Iris, a kindred spirit who sets out on a quest to help him fix his misfiring time-travel device and get him home.
Much of The Devil Wears Prada's enduring excellence lies in its outstanding cast and their performances, including Streep's Oscar-nominated turn as the icy yet magnificent Miranda; Hathaway's wide-eyed transformation from frumpy to fabulous; and Blunt's sarcastic, slightly maniacal take on a girl who'll do anything to live her fashion dreams. That core trio are all back, as well as Stanley Tucci as Runway's beloved art director, Nigel, plus director David Frankel and screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna. There'll be new faces too, including Kenneth Branagh, Lucy Liu and Bridgerton's Simone Ashley.
The new film also kicks off a stellar year of Anne Hathaway on the big screen, with Christopher Nolan's epic The Odyssey, Colleen Hoover adaptation Verity and David Lowery's pop star psychological thriller Mother Mary also arriving in 2026.
In cinemas from 1 May, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is the ultimate treat for fans of fashion and film alike. As Miranda Priestly would say, "That's all". Sophie Butcher
